A Note on the Allison & Partners Core Values from A Long-time Believer (That’s right, I drank the Kool-aid)

March 7, 2011

Almost 7 years ago, I sat in a room full of excited, motivated people at the first Allison & Partners retreat.  Little did I recognize at the time what a unique experience and environment Scott, Andy and Scott had begun to create and one that I would continue to be a part of for such a long time.  It was an opportunity for the entire agency, then only 24 people (although arguably some of the loudest people I’ve ever met), to sit in a room and hash out what this place would be short-term and long.  We had one guideline from the founding partners – “It’s About the Work” – everything else was up to us.

A testament to that early group is the level of engagement we had during that brainstorm session.  Everyone in the room contributed, some shouting from the rafters in heated discussion over the wording of a particular value, some quietly raising their hands and waiting for acknowledgement.  But it worked; we walked out 2 hours later with six additional core values that still hold up today, the first of many Allison & Partners’ boiler plates, and our mission statement as an agency.

We left that retreat with respect for our peers across all 4 offices (at the time) to live those core values and we have every day since.  New employees at all levels have quickly adopted them. It shows in the core values sessions Scott Pansky has led over the last few months and most importantly in the work we do for our clients. “It’s About the Work” and its sub-tenets resonate for everyone here.  I’ve seen partners make table tents to make sure a client media event goes off without a hitch and account coordinators dedicate countless hours to make sure their teams have all the information they need readily available.

I’m one of about 10 people from that original retreat still with Allison & Partners.  For those that have experienced agency life, that number alone is a testament to this place.  I’ve heard it time and again – people just don’t stay at agencies for 5, 6, 7 years – but here they do and it benefits the environment and the work we do.

I’ll close with a little photo tribute to the original 24 and the mission statement we still live by today.  Some have moved on and others have joined us, but the experience holds true.  We live by the work we do, and the tremendous results we have provided our clients.

Hey, Jordan – I remember that retreat and the energy was incredible. As one of the old guys in the photo I can attest that there isn’t a better agency to work for on the planet, at least not in my experience. It was the best place I ever worked, and it’ exciting to see the success keep coming.
